October's Update
October’s Community Service Hours: 4 hours
Cumulative Hours: 6 hours
Hey guys! This month I went back to the Grace at the Green Light organization and helped out with their breakfast distribution to the unhoused community. This month Westin joined me both times and we got to experience different roles at the event. The first time we went this month was on October 12th. First we helped set up the clothing department where people could find clothes that worked for them. Then we were tasked with handing out the already packed food to the people while collecting their tickets. I believe we served approximately 270 people that day and this was a cool experience since we got to personally meet everyone that was able to attend and benefit from this organization’s work. Afterwards, we just helped clean up before heading out. The next time on October 24th, we actually worked in the kitchen to help prepare the food for everyone. We mostly just had to pack the food into containers so it was easier to pass the food out. We helped prepare over 350 packed meals that day before helping clean up again. I really enjoy this type of volunteer work, as I have always been involved with helping the unhoused and underserved community in my past.
This month in our Pharmacology program we have been focusing on the Autonomic Nervous System and the Cardiovascular system. I definitely found the ANS unit to be slightly more challenging, but I still find the information we learned to be interesting and should prove to be useful in my future. I have always liked learning about the CV system, so this has been my favorite unit so far. Since we learn about the concepts in great detail, I can say that my knowledge for the CV system has substantially increased. Today we got to take part in a simulation where we tried applying our knowledge to a life-like clinical situation. I really enjoyed this activity and felt like it helped me grasp the concepts better. Overall, this program continues to make me more prepared for a career in healthcare.
