November's Update

November’s Community Service Hours: 7 hours

Cumulative Hours: 13 hours

This month I was able to finally go back home again for the first time this semester during Thanksgiving break. So, I was actually able to help out with the Hearts for the Homeless, an organization I used to be deeply involved with. This is an organization that gives free blood pressure and blood glucose screening to the underserved community of Sacramento, California. During my undergraduate years, I served as a member until I became the president of the UC Davis chapter during the 2024-25 school year. Now, I currently serve as a liaison and do most of my work behind the scenes. However, since I was able to go back to California again, I was able to serve at two of their locations again. On 11/28/25 we served at Wind Youth Services for 3 hours. This is an organization that caters towards the younger generation of the unhoused community. Then the following day on 11/29/25, we did blood pressure screenings at YOLO Food Bank for 4 hours. Here we mostly meet individuals that are of lower-economic status and are able to make sure they are taking care of themselves properly. I actually really enjoyed this experience after doing this pharmacology curriculum because now when we ask more information about their medications and underlying issues, I can make sense of their responses.

This month, in our Pharmacology program, we focused on the Cardiovascular system and the Renal system. I have always loved the cardiovascular system, and hope to one day become a cardiologist. So, I personally really liked this unit and enjoyed furthering my knowledge of this topic. However, the renal system has always been a difficult topic for me, making me initially scared to begin this unit. Although I usually struggle with the renal system, this time I felt like I actually was able to make sense of how everything works. The curriculum is laid out in a way that really helped me conceptualize the concept better. Overall, this month went pretty well for me in terms of grades and I enjoyed getting a chance to work with Hearts for the Homeless again in person.
